INTRODUCTION - The Name: Italia
What's in a name? How did Italy/Italia get its name? This fascinating documentary traces the origins of the Italic tribes in central Italy from their Sabine roots, the rise of the Peligne nation, and through the Roman occupation to the Social War in 91 BC. The video was shot on location in central Italy in the town of Corfinio, site of ancient Corfinium. We visit this picturesque rural town, meet the town folk and explore the town's ancient history. Special features include visits to Sulmona where candy coated almonds were invented, a Roman villa excavation and the famous Cathedral of San Pelino.
A unique feature of this documentary is that it is in both Italian and English with appropriate subtitles. For example, interviews with the mayor and archeological site conservator are in Italian with English subtitles. Narration is in English with Italian subtitles. Total length of the video is about 51 minutes.
BACKGROUND - Author's notes
As you can see from our list of videos, we love Italy. What we didn't know was that the name "Italia" or Italy originated in our ancestral town of Corfinio. After much research we scheduled a trip to Italy to meet with the Mayor of Corfinio and the museum curator.
Corfinio has a new museum dedicated to the preservation of artifacts and history of the Peligne nation. Ancient Corfinium was known as the "Metropolis of the Peligne" and in 91 BC was set up as a capital in central Italy in opposition to Rome.
We started shooting in September of 2008 getting all the archeological sites, interviews and a guided tour of the new museum. Like many projects, no amount of "book" research can prepare you for actually being there. As a result we felt we needed to rework the script. Once back in the studio and editing began we realized we really needed to go back and shoot more scenes with the narrator and video additional historical locations. In April of 2009 we finished the field work and in October of 2009 we finished the NTSC version of the documentary for the US market. The PAL (European) formatted documentary was finished shortly afterwards.
